It really is about time for a new computer. I spent the day at home working on a paper and presentation that was due for class tonight, and about an hour before I needed to leave the computer went haywire. Hasn't been the same since. Unfortunately I think I need to reformat and reinstall Vista to get it all in working order again....
While working on the Engage: Publish module's latest round of enhancements I started having problems working with my development machine at home. The machine here is a Vista Ultimate machine that I've blogged about getting configured in the past. The issue I had been stumbling over for a few weeks, though only researched solutions last night, had to do with ASP.NET Ajax. DNN ships with an older version of the System.Web.Extensions DLL. Which appears to work fine on my machine at work (in which I probably also had the AJAX framework installed). At home though on Vista whenever I tried to go to one of my test pages that had Publish installed I would get an error about the Scriptmanager must come before the Updatepanel control. Well fine and dandy, but I'm positive that we had the codecheck in place for this. It ends up that with Vista I was having problems with that old version of System.web.extensions. The fix was rather easy, I simple downloaded the .Net 3.5 framework and installed it. Now it appears that all is well once again in Vistaland. If you need to download the 3.5 framework get it here from MS. Now I have to decide, do I install VS2008 on my home machine, or do I spend some money and upgrade my machine (build a new one), then install 2k8 on that..... Decisions decisions. Posted from...
So I know I did this back in November without issues, but in February I reinstalled XP and got away from Vista. Last week I went back to Vista in order to get better support for my new Canon HV20 camcorder. I installed Visual Studio 2k5 the other day, and immediately tried to install SP1. I've been unable to get SP1 to install. It never actually errors out, it loads the screen that says "extracting" in the title bar, and says it may take a few minutes to a few hours to install. I've let it run multiple times for 12 hours, and this time around it's been running 24 hours, with no change in status. Anyone have any ideas? I guess i'm about ready to uninstall VS and start over if I can't figure out anything else. Posted from...
If you recently purchased a Canon HV20 you might be a bit surprised when you go to try and use any of the High Definition video you recorded with it. Canon didn't bother to include software on the CD to actually use the video you record. You might try hooking up your camera to your Windows XP machine via Firewire but that won't get you very far either. All I was able to do was to get it to the point where it would transfer DV, which wasn't acceptable to me so I didn't even bother to see if it would work. Instead I installed Windows Vista Ultimate on my desktop tonight. I installed my old Firewire card, hooked up the HV20 to the machine and I had Moviemaker importing video in no time, in HD even! I will let it import tonight and see what all I can do with the video in the morning. I have a tape with about an hour's worth of content on it, some of it for www.project240z.com so I hope to get that posted online tomorrow. Posted from...
Well... I'm back onto Vista yet again. I started running Vista on my main desktop back in the fall, sometime right around the RTM date. February came and I was getting sick of it. I was having a horrible time with Vista, I reinstalled XP and came to find out that most of my problems weren't actually Vista, but my network in my house, my domain controller was down, but up, and killing the network. Once I got that cleaned up XP was flying again. So this past weekend I got a Canon HV20 camcorder, and XP just won't handle it with Windows Movie Maker, which I use for all the videos I put together for my Datsun 240Z over at www.project240z.com. So tonight I reinstalled Windows Vista Ultimate. I just finished reinstalling Office 2007, and now have some more things to install, configure, and play with. Hope to try to transfer some video later tonight.... More on that if it happens! Technorati Tags: Vista, Videos, Windows Movie Maker, Canon, HD, Camcorder, HV20 Posted from...
Well, not me, but my Computer is going under the knife tonight.I've had it with Vista and am getting my machine ready to reformat and I'll be installing XP Pro again.I'll post again sometime tonight/tomorrow when I'm back up and running. CYA Vista, I'd say it's been fun, but I can't. Posted from...
It looks like some of the Vista Ultimate features are now available for download. I've got the Hold'em and bitlocker ultimates downloading now, along with what looked like 5-7 other updates as well.Release day! How are you celebrating? I'll be working, that's about all I've got planned. Posted from...
Last week I got started on getting the DotNetNuke Wiki module into a 4.4.0 source solution, so that I could convert the module to ASP.NET 2.0 and debug it in Visual Studio. Normally this wouldn't be anything out of the ordinary, I setup DotNetNuke solutions for a living, I can do it in my sleep, but I decided I was going to do all of this on my main machine running Windows Vista Ultimate edition. You would think this might not be too difficult, but it sure was. Here's what I was starting with. DotNetNuke 4.4.0 Source package, available for download from www.dotnetnuke.com. Visual Studio 2005 w/ SP1 IIS7 Installed IIS6 compatibility partially installed. After multiple failures, and quite a bit of head smashing (on the wall) I gave up for the weekend. I blogged about the troubles, and a little birdie came to the rescue (If you read this birdie and don't mind me mentioning your name let me know)! The little birdie pointed out the Visual Studio 2005 Service Pack 1 Update for Windows Vista Beta. I believe this update did the trick because after installing the update everything seemed to work! Here are some of the things I know you have to perform, as well as the update, to get DNN, Vista and VS2k5 to play nicely. I hope I didn't leave anything out. 1. Install IIS7 (found in the control panel, classic view, programs and features, "Turn windows features on or off"). 2. Install IIS6 Compatibility, the screenshot below is what my IIS installed features look like 3. Create your web site in IIS, I actually created a new site, not a virtual directory. A benefit of IIS7 on Vista, the ability to create multiple web sites! I just used localhost as the host header, and pointed it to the location of my extracted DNN files. 4. For the Application Pool in IIS I chose the Classic .Net AppPool 5. Under the Authentication section of your IIS web site be sure to enable Windows Authentication 6. Configure the rest of your DotNetNuke installation the normal way. (Setup the proper folder permissions, network service account gets full rights to the web site folder). Setup your web.config file to use the proper connection strings. 7. Open Visual Studio 2005 using the Run As Administrator option if you're using UAC 8. Open up the DotNetNuke.sln file from your extracted files. When you run the site for the first time DNN should run through it's installation procedures, installing the database, extracting a few modules, etc. I did have a problem with the project the first two times I ran it, but on the third try it seemed to install properly. I don't know if it was just a fluke or not the first two times, but all is well now. 9. Now I'm able to run and debug the DotNetNuke 4.4.0 solution on my Windows Vista machine. Hope this helps some of you out in your endeavors. (All of the screenshots were made utilizing the Snipping tool inside of Windows Vista. Where's snippy? I get to it by clicking on start, and typing SNIP into the search bar, try it out!) It looks like today is the day I get to install the Zune software on my Windows Vista machine at home. Oh happy day!Though, so far, while browsing the Zune site with Vista I still can't download the software. i see"Zune software is compatible with the following operating systems:Windows® Home, Professional, and Tablet PC Edition XP Service Pack 2 Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 Update Rollup 2 Windows Vista"Which is really helpful, Vista is supported, but it still won't let me download it yet ;) Posted from...
While looking around for a Zune SDK this evening I found a way to use your Zune as an external storage device. I haven't yet tested this, so I can't guarantee it works yet.Be sure to backup your registry before playing around with it.Make sure your Zune is not plugged in and your Zune software isn’t running open up regedit by going to the start menu and selecting “run”. Type regedt32 and hit “OK” Browse to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\ControlSet001\Enum\USB\ Search for “PortableDeviceNameSpace”. This should be contained in the Vid_####&Pid_####\########_-_########_-_########_-_########\Device Parameters within the above …\USB\ The ##’s listed here will be numbers and letters specific to your Zune Change the following values: EnableLegacySupport to 1 PortableDeviceNameSpaceExcludeFromShell to 0 ShowInShell to 1 Plug in your Zune, and make sure the Zune Software starts up. Hopefully at this point you can open up “My Computer” and browse your device, though it does NOT show up as a drive letterI found the information on ZuneBoards.com and Phaleux.com while looking around.Still no word on when the Zune software will work with Vista. Well, I spent most of the day today doing a few things around the house. First, I took the good wheels off the Tahoe and put the stock wheels and tires back on. I figured that with Winter upon us I'd rather leave the shiney wheels down in the basement. While I was changing the wheels I had Vista installing on my machine again. I used the same machine that I had RC1/RC2 installed on, but this time I started over, as I had done with RC1, but not RC2. I installed Vista fresh on this machine. Everything is great so far. I installed Office Pro, Live Messenger, and a few other things. One of those other items is Windows Live Writer. I hadn't tried it out before (yes, I know, I'm behind). This is my first post with it, I'm not yet sure how I feel about it, but we'll see. Hope this post works, otherwise I may never try it again. As for the Vista machine, I've made the switch, I imported my 1.1gig PST file over to this machine, and setup most of my email accounts on it, so I'll be using this machine for all my email, development now. What's left? To get ZUNE working with Vista, then I'll be all set! Once that happens I'll also install Vista on my laptop, the 64bit version of course. Earlier this week I posted a quick rant about the new MS Zune not working on Vista.Someone posted a comment on another one of my blogs that they are working on getting Zune/Vista compatibility fixed by next week. I sure hope so! If that's the case I'll be installing Vista on my Laptop before we head off to get married. Is this just another nasty internet rumor? Possibly, but I know the source, and they have a few more MS connections that I do!  Posted from...

The more and more I use gmail the more I get pissed off at this feature. Whenever I go there, the darn window pops up in front of all my other windows. I like to load gmail up and go on to something else, coming back to Gmail when I'm ready. Can anyone tell me how to keep Gmail from making itself the top window when it loads? This is most annoying in Vista. Please help! Posted from...
Has anyone tried upgrading Vista RC1 to RC2? Is it possible? I've got RC1 running at home, don't want to reinstall right now if I have to. If I can upgrade to RC2 I'll do it, otherwise I'll wait for the final release before I start over. Thanks for the help Posted from...
Just over a week and a half ago I installed Windows Vista Ultimate RC1 on the newest of my desktop machines. Overall it's been a pleasurable experience, unlike some of the other DotNetNuke core team members have had! So far Vista has worked out well with me for VS 2005, I even got a release out for DnnCart.com last week that was completely written on this VISTA box. I did realize a few things though. I NEEDED to get more RAM. Trying to run Photoshop and VIsual Studio 2k5, as well as a few RDP windows was very taxing on the box. The machine is a Dell, Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.80GHz dual core, RADEON X300/X550 Series (Microsoft Corporation - WDDM), 149gig SATA drive. It had 768mb of RAM on it (a mix of 3200 and 4200. With those stats my Windows Experience Index has a base score of 2.0. The limiting number being the Graphics card. Here's a shot of my score This evening I installed 2 gigs of DDR2 4200 RAM, and so far it is flying! Hopefully tomorrow I'll be installing a nVidia GeForce 7900GS 256MB PCI-E x16 Video Card that I got off of www.Woot.com a few weeks back, this weekend I also ordered a Seagate 250GB SATA Hard Drive refurb off of woot. I've gotta pick up a DVI to VGA converter tomorrow so I can use the car, my 19" VGA just won't fit into the DVI plug! I ordered two off Tiger Direct last week, but of course I ordered the wrong ones. I figure once I install this new card my score should go up quite a bit! We'll see how it goes. After I get the score up I'll have to look into getting another monitor up here as well, I'm itching to try my hand in a dual screen setup, though two 19" CRTs will sure take up a lot of deskspace!
