December 2012 saw the release of a whiskey with a new grain recipe, the first time in over 100 years. This bottle was the first in what has become 3 releases of their Rye product. Stay tuned for future blog posts about the Rested Rye and Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Rye. Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Rye is Master Distiller Jeff Arnett’s attempt at a new mash bill, this one consisting of 70 percent rye, 18 percent corn and 12 percent malted barley.

The bottle is the shape of Jack Daniel’s Single Barrel, with minimal labelling. The bottle is embossed with “Jack Daniel Distillery”  The front of the label consists of:

This bottle has a very similar label to the bottle released in 2013, but this time around has a lighter colored (more grey than black) snow scene, with more gold accents around the label. The neck of the bottle, unlike the 2013 release, has a red white and gold label.

In our last blog post we covered the third in the Holiday Select series, in this one, we cover the fourth and final (as of 2018) release, the Holiday Select 2014 Limited Edition bottle from Jack Daniel’s.

This bottle, unlike all the other Holiday Select bottles comes in a box that has the face cut out to showcase the bottle. If you open the box, the back slides out and the bottle can be freed from the holder inside. The Sides of the box read Limited Edition 2014, while the back of the box (and the bottle) reads:

The 2014 bottling marks the first time I have chosen our Holiday Select barrels to be bottled individually. This year I wanted to showcase the depth and richness that a single barrel can offer and selected the most robust and complex whiskey I sampled. Each barrel is truly unique and we hope the bottle you’ve selected helps make your holiday special. – Jeff Arnette, Master Distiller

The shape of the bottle is a bit different than the earlier Holiday Select bottles as the Jack Daniel’s signature is towards the top, instead off on the right side as with the earlier bottles. The labelling on the bottle is a mixture of white and gold, and reads Limited Edition 2014 Jack Daniel’s Single Barrel Holiday Select Small Batch. The holly berry from earlier releases is missing.

In the photos below you’ll see two different bottles, one still boxed up, and one that I drank. For the 2014 Holiday Select release, I took my Family to Lynchburg, TN for the Jack Daniel’s barrel tree lighting and bottle signing event. I purchased a case of the 2014 Holiday Select bottles, and had those signed by Jeff Arnett and Chris Fletcher (Assistant Distiller). I gave most of the bottles away as gifts to friends and family, but kept three bottles for myself, one of which I chose to drink. That would be the empty bottle in the photos below.

The 2014 bottle is 48% Alcohol, or 96 Proof, down from 98 the year before. You can find it online at a few retailers, best price/stock I found was $199 as of December 10, 2018.

In our last blog post we covered the first in the Holiday Select series, in this one, we cover the second, the Holiday Select 2012 Limited Edition bottle from Jack Daniel’s.

The bottle comes in a black box, but unlike 2011 this box isn’t a clamshell opening. The bottle and an insert slide out the top of the box. The back of the box reads:

THIS JACK DANIEL’S LIMITED EDITION IS FROM BARRELS WE USED TO CRAFT OUR HOLIDAY BARREL TREE. FOR 2012, OUR MASTER DISTILLER, JEFF ARNETT, HAS SELECTED BARRELS WITH A LIGHT OAK CHARACTER, ALLOWING THE SOFTWARE NOTES OF VANILLA AND CARAMEL TO SHINE THROUGH. WE HOPE IT BRINGS A SPECIAL QUALITY TO YOUR HOLIDAY SEASON.

The shape of the bottle is the same as the 2011 bottle, but the labelling has some gold instead of all white. The holly berry leaves are also in green, instead of the white as in 2011. Also differing from the 2011 bottle, the text on the back of the bottle now matches the text on the back of the box.

The 2012 bottle is 45.2% Alcohol, or 90.4 Proof, down from 100 the year before. Finding this one online appears a little more difficult, I found one on ebay listed at $165 as of December 5, 2018.

In my previous blog post I talked about the Tennessee Tasters’ High Angel’s Share Barrels, in this post I cover the second release in the series, Hickory Smoked. The bottle is labelled as "Tennessee Whiskey Finish with Charred Hickory Staves".

This selection was from master taster Marsha Hale, whom according to her Linked In profile has worked at Jack Daniel’s for almost 31 years.

I have yet to decide if I will try these bottles myself. I do have two of each, with the original intention of keeping one and having the other for trading to fill my collection with missing items. If however I could come across some other bottles, I would likely try one out myself, only time will tell if that happens.

In October 2018 Jack Daniel’s put out a press release announcing a new Tasters’ Series of bottles/releases. I won’t go into the full details of the press release, you can read it here, but I do want to document the releases as I acquire them! 

Towards the end of the month they released the first two bottles in the series, High Angel’s Share Barrels and Smoked Hickory Finish. This post is about the High Angel’s Share Barrels release.

High Angel’s Share Barrels – whiskey barreled in January 2013 which offered an unusually low yield, presenting a unique and deep concentration of flavors with a dark color at 107-proof. Selected by Assistant Master Distiller and Master Taster Chris Fletcher. Available early-October.

These releases, are limited to around 24,000 bottles, and only available at the Distillery and in select stores in Tennessee. This had caused me to start looking at making a trip to Lynchburg to pick up some bottles for myself, but family events the past few weekends have prevented me from being able to make the 5-6 hour drive there (plus another 5-6 hours back).

This past Friday I found out that some fellow coworkers of mine were on their way to Nashville for a weekend getaway, so I reached out to them to ask them a huge favor, to do some hunting for me while they were there. I sent them a screen shot of the two new Tasters’ bottles, and asked them to see if they could find them while they were there.

Lucky for me they did! A big shout out to K&K for picking them up for me. Here are the photos of the High Angel’s Share Barrel bottle.

In May of 2019 Jack Daniel’s released the second in their Legacy Edition line. TotalWine.com has the bottled described as

In March of 2019 Jack Daniel’s released the third bottle in their Tennessee Tasters’ series, Barrel Reunion #1, Straight Tennessee Whiskey Finished in Red Wine Barrels.

Notes: Rested at least 228 days in win barrel.

As a whiskey maker and a barrel maker, we see the barrel not simply as a container but as an ingredient. This unique whiskey began with a hand-crafted barrel that matured Jack Danie’s. Once emptied it aged fine Tennessee red wine. Then, finally it returned home to finish a small batch of our Tennessee Whiskey. What emerges from this second barreling are notes of caramel and oak with whispers of cherry and blackberry. We think you’ll be intrigued by this new finish and celebrate with us the reunion of our barrel and whiskey.

I picked up a few of these bottles at the Distillery in March 2019 and then picked up another bottle in Memphis on a trip in April. You can only find these Tennessee Tasters’ bottles in the state of Tennessee, so if you are considering a trip, be sure to get there soon! Rumor is there is another bottle coming out in 2019.

Wow, what a weekend. The 2019 running of the Dirty Kanza has come and gone, and all I can think about is doing it again, not next year, but next weekend! I can’t wait for the opportunity to enter and hopefully try the event in 2020. I’ll give a rundown of the weekend’s activities.

So as we near the 2019 running of the Dirty Kanza everyone is likely starting to taper down their training and finish up with organizing any supplies and items needed for the event.

Being that this is the first year that myself, Steve and Chris (3 St. Louis boys) are doing the ride, we are going into things a little blind, but one of the things that Steve and I talked about on our final long training ride this past Sunday, was a list of things to bring.

One day I’ll get better about these write-ups so that I make myself do them the day of the ride, or the day there after, when everything is fresh in my mind. That being said, the 2019 Tour Of Hermann Gravel Challenge was only 9 days ago, and it is still pretty fresh in my mind!

Hermann Missouri is just a little over an hour drive from my house here in Wildwood, and I’ve never been there before. The closest I’ve been was the 2017 Katy Trail ride in which we passed north of Hermann on the trail, we definitely saw signs for Hermann, but that was towards the end of Day 2 (112 miles that day) and I was not at all interested in taking an off trail detour.

In prep for my riding of the Dirty Kanza 100 coming up in June, I’ve been trying to get some miles in, and looking for some gravel that is “near by” to get some gravel miles in as well. Last week I was talking with my neighbor, who tends to ride his bike(s) a little, he mentioned the Femme Osage Trail, but I wasn’t able to head out with him on Saturday afternoon. Sunday morning I decided I would try to map out that route based on what he said, and started looking on GravelMap.com.

It has been a while since I’ve blogged here on BicycleTips and it is time to get started again! Less than 2 months remains until I ride the 100 mile distance at the Dirty Kanza #DK100 in the hills of Kansas, so it is time to dust off the bike, dust off the keyboard, and get to stroking the pedals and the keys.

In 2016, The Jack Daniel Distillery celebrated 150 years, in celebration of that milestone they released both a bottle that was easy to find, and a more collectible bottle, a 1 Liter bottle with a decorative black case. Recently I went through a ransomware attack, I was arrogant enough to leave RDP open on my machine at home, and someone was able to brute force their way into the system, install ransomware, and totally bork up my files.

Fortunately for me, I had a large LARGE number of files, and the sheer number of files (movies, photos, documents, videos, music, etc), I caught the attack early enough that I was able to salvage some of my files, and recover a large % of those files from backups I had taken in 2018.

Unfortunately I didn't have everything backed up, and I am in the process of trying to "save" all of the "no_more_ransom" files that are now encrypted on my machine and unable to be opened. In the process of trying to migrage "Good" files to clean drives, and "bad" files to a backup drive I needed to salvage my 1tb SSD that had Windows installed on it. In the process of trying to move things around and utilize that drive, without simply formatting it (which will come later) I needed to remove all files from the Windows Directory, and the various Program Files directories.

I was unable to remove a large number of files in those directories however, due to them being system files and permissions not allowing me to delete. I did manage to come up with a few command line tools that I could use to unlock those files and delete them from the device, I wanted to document them here in case I need them in the future, or perhaps they will help others.

BE FOREWARNED YOU SHOULD NOT DO THIS ON DRIVES YOU CARE ABOUT, USE AT YOUR OWN RISK

To do this, I opened a CMD (command) window by clicking on START>Run> and typing CMD. Right click on the option that shows up and choose "Run as Administrator"

From there you need to "Take Ownership" of the directories, you can run the following command in a directory you want to ultimately delete, in my case I was deleting files on g:\windows

takeown /R /F *

After that I simply needed to reset all the permissions/access control list with the following command:

ICACLS * /T /Q /C /RESET

After that I was able to hard delete the files from the Windows Explorer by pressing Shift-DELETE on the directory I wanted to remove. 

In September of 2017 Jack Daniel’s released their standard bottle of Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Rye, their 70% rash mash bill. This is a more affordable version of the Rye from Jack Daniel’s than the Single Barrel Rye released in 2016.

The bottle is your standard square bottle from Jack Daniel’s, though the label has a tan background with black writing and green highlights. The front of the bottle reads:

This post is coming 6 months (maybe more?) too late, but at least it is coming. The 2018 ProSolo Finale and Solo National Championships was a week of ups and downs for the team. The results were mixed across the board in terms of performance with some highlights and some down times as well.

This post continues our series of blog posts about Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Rye. As the Rye has matured, we’ve gone from Unaged to Rested and now on to Single Barrel. In 2016 Jack Daniel’s released the Single Barrel Rye, a 94 proof Tennessee Rye Whiskey. Depending on where you acquired it, it may or may not have come with a box. The front of the box is adorned with:

in 1892 Jack Daniel opened the Red Dog Saloon on the Lynchburg town square. While nothing remains of it but legend, the distillery decided to release a 125th anniversary bottle in 2017 to celebrate the occasion.

The bottle is adorned with black red white and gold decoration. One one side it reads:

“THE RED DOG SALOON ESTABLISHED IN 1892 IS THE MORE MYSTERIOUS OF THE TWO JACK DANIEL’S ORIGINAL LYNCHBURG SALOONS. NO PHOTOGRAPHS OF IT EXIST BUT IF IT WAS ANYTHING LIKE ITS SISTER WATERING HOLE THE WHITE RABBIT SALOON THE HOUSE WAS PACKED WITH CORNET MUSIC CAMARADERIE AND CONVERSATION”

On the other side it reads:

“MR JACK NEVER DID ANYTHING HALFWAY. ESTD. 1866 OLD NO 7 BRAND. EVERYDAY WE MAKE IT, WE’LL MAKE IT THE BEST WE CAN. THAT WAS JACK’S MOTTO WHETHER IT CAME TO MAKING HIS SMOOTH SIPPIN WHISKEY OR MAKING A PLACE TO SERVE IT. TRUE TO MR. JACK’S TRADITION EVERY DROP IS STILL MADE IN LYUNCUBRG, TENNESSEE”

The Red Dog Saloon bottle is easy to find, you can find them online as of 12/31/2018 for $27.

So this will be a quick and easy blog post, but if you try to google it (prior to this post) you won’t find any information on how to add Google Analytics to Orchard Core.

I did it the simple way today, by adding the JavaScript code provided by Google Analytics into a Widget I have embedded on my CollectorOfJack.com website.

Because I already had a Widget on every page, using the theme for the blog, I just input the content into that widget.

1. Navigate to your Admin site /admin
2. Click Content Definition
3. Click Content Types
4. Next to RAW HTML click List Items
5. Add your snippet of code into the HTML there. Mine looked like this:

There you go, a quick and easy way to embed the Google Analytics JavaScript into your page in Orchard Core.

A seasonal blend of apple cider liqueur & Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Whiskey”

The bottle is adorned with a skin wrapped in a wintery scene, complete with pine trees, snowflakes, an old snowed in cabin, a reindeer, some people, horses, and even a sled! The neck of the bottle has a black and gold label, while later releases have a different color (check out the next blog post!)

Tennessee Cider

5 oz. Winter Jack

Pour into microwave-safe glass, heat and enjoy!

The second:

Jack Daniel’s White Cider

4 oz. Winter Jack

1 oz. Caramel Sauce

4 ox. Half & Half

Stir ingredients together in a microwave-safe class, heat and enjoy!
