So this is actually a very common question on the internet, and why would I post about it? Because I had the question, and I had to spend time looking it up and reading, so for all of you newbies (like me) who are getting into biking, the question stands. Do you wear underwear with bicycle shorts? The short answer is NO. The longer answer follows below.

Rather than rewrite a posting from a couple of years ago, I figured I would just link to that post.

There are a few changes to that post though. We are no longer in Colorado (California now) and we have a beautiful 11 month old daughter!

If you follow any of my blogs, you may remember all the discussion last fall about Movember. Yes, you read that correctly, Movember, take the N in November and replace it with an M, Movember!

Why would you ever rename November to Movember? To raise awareness for cancers that affect men, primarily prostate cancer, but others as well. The basic premise of Movember is this, for the entire month, you grow a mustache. How simple is that? Start on November 1st, clean shaven, and finish on November 30th, clean shaven except for your mustache! All while raising awareness, and money for research into cancers that affect men.

The Personal Connection

Earlier this year my father was diagnosed with prostate cancer. While he is fortunate that they believe it to be caught very early there is always the risk that it can spread, He is getting ready to start the process of treatment. So obviously, my connection to Movember this year is even stronger than last year.

Movember 2010

Last year we formed a DotNetNuke team on Movember.com, which we plan to do again this year, just as soon as they open up the process. I’ll post a blog, and update this blog post as well, with a link to the team and how you can join.

We had 38 folks join the team, and a lot more donate to the cause. While not everyone who joined the team worked for DotNetNuke Corporation, a number of the members were from our offices around the world. Check out this slide show comparing some of the employees to famous Mo’s (mustaches)

Then of course there is the fact that last year I said if I personally raised $1,000, I would shave my head at the end of the month. Well, I did, and I did.

To be honest, my wife was NOT happy about the head shaving thing, and most of the office was pretty put off by it as well! I won't be making that challenge again, not this year, but perhaps I will come up with something.

Goal for 2011

In 2010 we raised almost $7k for Movember, for 2011 we’re setting a goal of $10k, doable, but it is definitely going to take some work to get there! We’re going to need to grow our team, and we’re going to need to get everyone involved to try and raise money. I think everyone should set a goal

Getting Ready

So you have just under two months to start getting ready for Movember. Most importantly, prep your significant other for the fact that you are going to grow the mustache! If you can't grow a MO, then perhaps you can find a surrogate to do it for you!

I can’t believe it, but tonight after work I came home and washed, rain-x’d and waxed the Mazda CX-7. We’ve owned it since December, and this is the first time I’ve put wax on it.

I’m so ashamed, I don’t know if I have ever owned a car (besides the 240z) that ever went that long without getting waxed. Even the Turbobird got waxed and it was a huge mess.

The CX-7 was a mess, as is the 350z right now. One of the downfalls of living in Half Moon Bay, if you don’t park your cars in the garage (we don’t currently have room) they WILL be wet almost every morning.

Perhaps this weekend I can get the garage cleaned and come up with room for at least one of the cars.

So if you are anything like my mother you probably are wondering what the heck has Chris been up to lately? Well, I am not AWOL, just busy!

I spent last week in Lincoln Nebraska at the SCCA Solo National Championships, what’s that? Car racing. How’d I do? eh, not worth mentioning where I actually finished, but I did get to see friends I haven’t seen since Nationals in 2008, the last time I attended. I couldn’t really believe that I hadn’t been since 2008, but that is the truth, with the move to Colorado in 2009 and then California in 2010 I just didn’t get to go. I’ll have more blog posts/videos/photos from Solo Nationals in the coming week.

On that note, I put out two new open source releases as well. I updated DNNSimpleArticle with a fix for DNN6 and made made a few other minor changes. As always, the module is released in C# and you can get the installable package, or the source package over on https://dnnsimplearticle.codeplex.com/. I also released an update for Multifunction, the World’s Best Free DotNetNuke Skin. It has a minor CSS fix for DNN6 (and 6.0.1). I also removed the custom actions menu it was using in favor of the new DotNetNuke 6 specific actions menu. MultiFunction is a C# skin, with both install and source packages available from https://multifunction.codeplex.com/

Back in May I picked up a variety of parts from the MakerFaire in San Mateo. One of those parts (2x actually) was the MakerShield.

I don’t think I’ve ever soldered this much on a circuit board before. I did plenty of soldering for the Project 240z back in the day, but it was all just joining wiring together for the Megasquirt and the fuel injection system. You can see some photos of the MakerShield here.

If you don’t know Will Strohl, you are one of the lucky ones. He’s an annoying guy, a total lunatic when it comes to DotNetNuke, but even that can’t fix his flaws.

You can however help fix one of the flaws of the “Mighty” Will Strohl. Will has a problem, he can’t afford collared shirts. Seriously. if you’ve ever met him you know this.

So I am stealing the title for this posting, but I swear I have a good reason for doing so! When I finally got around to setting up this BicycleTips website I stumbled across another guy who started blogging this year about biking. Joel over at at www.reasons2ride.com has a great website coming along. Be sure to head on over and follow his progress. In short, Joel got fed up with his life, his weight, and decided to change things. Something I completely understand. I have a very similar goals, to get in better shape, and to lose weight. Bicycling is my method to achieve those goals, just as Joel’s.

No, while I am posting this message here, we aren't moving to Colorado any time soon. But I will post it here now. But I do greatly miss the wonderful state of Colorado, and I envision being back there again.

I just need to convince Natalie that Colorado is where we want to go after California....

Today is a day I don’t feel like blogging. Why not? Too much to do! I’m working on a big project in the evenings that I am hoping to finish up before I head to the St. Louis Day of .NET this weekend, so blogging will have to wait.

So today was our first time taking Jacqueline out for a bike ride. She loved it! If by loving it, I mean, she pretty much slept through the whole thing. A little back story, Jacqueline is coming up on 10 months old here in the next week and a half. She had a doctors appointment last week and the doc said it was okay to start pulling her behind the bike in a trailer if she’s strong enough to sit herself up. So we took the opportunity today to do just that. We loaded up the bikes and trailer, and headed over to Bicycle Sundays on Cañada Road in San Mateo County. Basically on most Sundays they shut down a 2.5 mile stretch of the road south of highway 92, for biking. It is a nice smooth surface, and a safe place to ride, there are tons of folks out there.

Today Natalie and I, along with Will Strohl and Kim Rausch (and kids), went to the Travis AFB Air Show, the weather was great, if a little windy. As we were walking around after the Thunderbirds show, taking photos and getting ready to leave I came across this spot on the tarmac

As we walked by that painted pavement I realized I had been there before.

That was where my dad retired after 30 years in the United States Air Force.

The latter two photos were taken with my first digital camera in March of 1998.

If you’re going to the Travis AFB Skies over Solano County this weekend, good luck finding a schedule! Actually, good luck of finding much of anything.

The website for the show appears to be https://www.travisairexpo.com/ but it hardly has anything useful on there. The only thing that is of any use is the do’s and don’ts section of the FAQ.

I’m hoping to get out there on Saturday to see the Thunderbirds, but there is no telling when they will actually perform. I assume later in the afternoon, hopefully that assumption isn’t wrong!

Maybe next year the folks running the show will setup a DotNetNuke based website, hell I’ll even help them out, so they can see how easy it is to setup and maintain content with the best open source content management system.

Today after finishing up the custom DotNetNuke Training I took off on the Causeway, crossing over the Lake Pontchartain Causeway bridge. The bridge is the longest continuous bridge over water in the World, so I had to take a drive over it.

From there I decided to head west to Hammond Louisiana. Why not? I drove through town, took a couple of pictures which I’ll post later, here is one I posted while I was there.

Anyone going to the TireRack SCCA Solo Nationals that is looking to split hotel costs? I’m flexible on arrival dates and locations, may even be willing to split costs on a rental car.

I’ve spent the last two evenings in the French Quarter. No, not drinking it up and partying like a college kid, but like a 34 year old married man, walking around with a camera looking for interesting things to take pictures of. No pictures of people yet, but check out some of the photos I took tonight.

Flying into New Orleans has to be one of the best views ever. It is amazing.

This evening I walked around a bit looking for dinner, a nice trip around the French Quarter. I didn’t take my good camera, just the point and shoot, but I took a couple of photos, here are two I uploaded.

 

So I finally got around to trying out the IMapMyRide application on my Android phone today, along with my Garmin ForeRunner 305 which I always use when I ride. Overall, I would say the application itself is pretty slick, nice interface, different than SportsTrackLive, though I am not sure it is any better yet. Read the full post for more
