Why not to buy from Southtown Dodge, AKA Southtown Dodge Sucks

Why not to buy from Southtown Dodge, AKA Southtown Dodge Sucks

Well lets begin the story with a little background.

The Mad Blogger was in the mood for a new ride. He's been driving a 2003 Nissan 350Z for 3+ years now, and wanted something up off the ground, a bit more visible and much larger. So he began by searching for used Chevrolet Tahoes. Why a Tahoe? Why not, The Mad Blogger can afford gas, even as prices rise, so why bother with trying to be "green", The Mad Blogger is not PC.

It didn't take TMB (The Mad Blogger) long to find what he was looking for. A 2005 Chevrolet Tahoe Z71, 4x4, every option on it except for a third row seat, and navigation. The Mad Blogger has no kids, he needs not a third row seat, he's also a man, he can find his way out of a pitchdark room with no doors, navigation is not a necessity.

He found his new ride at Southtown Dodge on Lindbergh Blvd in south St. Louis County. Now it was time to deal. The Tahoe had been sitting on the lot for over 90 days when TMB found it, so this meant he should be able to get a good deal. Priced out on KBB.com TMB found it to have a value of roughly $34k, asking price on it was $26,903. First offer to the dealer, Southtown Dodge, salesman was Mike Wall, was 25,500. The dealer wouldn't budge, they said they were at their clearance price and wouldn't come down. $26903, plus a BS fee of $97 dollars for paperwork.

The Mad Blogger would have none of this, he came back with another offer of $26,500 a day later, the dealer still wouldn't budge. They did know what the truck was worth, and weren't going to move on it. Fine, The Mad Blogger knows when to jump on a good deal. So he calls the dealer up this morning to tell them he'll be there at 4:30pm to give them his pre-approved loan information, and pick up the vehicle. Good ole Mike Wall comes back and says, sorry, we can't clean it up for delivery till we have a deposit or have started on the paperwork. So The Mad Blogger agrees to go down there over his lunch break and get the paperwork started. TMB doesn't really care if they clean the Tahoe, it's going to rain today, all he wanted was them to put the Brush Bar back on the front which they had removed between the first time TMB looked at it and the second time he went back.

TMB arrives at the dealer shortly after 11:30am this morning, good ole Mike Wall is there with the paperwork already started. Mike looks over The Mad Blogger's preapproved loan information and tells him that he won't be able to turn the Tahoe over to TMB for 7-10 days. WTF? Excuse The Mad Blogger, did you just tell him he can't pickup this truck today? TMB comes in with a loan check that he's been told is as good as cash and Southtown Dodge won't let him take the vehicle for 7-10 days? TMB don't think so.

After 15-20 minutes of no progress The Mad Blogger decides it's time to leave. The first thing TMB does it call up his lender to verify that the check should be good as gold with a dealer. They confirm this and say that they don't have problems with dealers accepting their checks, they did offer to talk to the dealer and have them a check mailed next day to arrive on Saturday. TMB declines, he's done dealing with Southtown Dodge. TMB decides he'll check for himself and jumps off the highway to stop at another dealer, Sunset Ford. The sales guy at Sunset Ford (sorry TMB didn't get his name to give him props) said they would have no problem accepting the TMB preapproved loan check and selling him a vehicle on the spot. Unfortunately for The Mad Blogger they didn't have a used Tahoe on the lot.

So, what's the moral of The Mad Blogger's story? Don't let a dealer like Southtown Dodge jack you around. If the sales guy, Mike Wall, or whomever your sales person is, EVER acts like a *** to you, walk out of there. The Mad Blogger took a little crap from Mike hoping he'd still get a good deal on this truck. He got nothing but a weeks worth of wasted time when he could have found another vehicle.

As a former employee of Southtown Dodge for 5 years I am very sorry that you had this experience there TMB. Of my 5 years there I spent nearly 2 years in New Car Sales so I am familiar with the sales process. I am not familiar with Mike Wall. I'm guessing that your lender is one that Southtown's financial department does not do business with regularly. I'm not sure why but Mike could have been pressuring you to do business with a Southtown Dodge preferred lender. I am sure that you could have got approved on the spot that night and taken delivery. Using your own lender would require that you prepare the paper work with Southtown Dodge, show said paperwork to your lender, then your lender will issue a check to the dealer which you can hand deliver. A preapproval isn't worth much in the car buying experience unless you are just trying to prove to the salesman that you can afford the car you are shopping for; which shouldn't be the salesman's concern anyway.

To the TMB. I brought a new truck from Elterman in 2001,As a true sale's person he was up front with everything.(THANKS JAMES). Unfortunatley as we all know, the auto industy in the USA is in total disarray right now. You would think any dealership would want your business right now, because gas prices are up and everyone is penny pinching, but as we all know most sales people are either total a**holes or just plain arrogante SOB'S. If people found out what it cost to make a vehicle you would be shocked. It cost about $25.000 to make a dodge 2500 with a diesel. SLT package. The cost of the rest of the vehicle is jakced up by the CEO'S to inflate the price to get there cut. Chrysler Crop is to top heavy like all the other auto makers are. So go figure. But any way sorry to rant. I have dealt with Mr.Wall and he is a guy who has ruined Southtown Dodge reputation for making good deals. Thanks you Mr. Wall.

We can relate to this story. After years of loyal customer buying from them we had the same problem with buying a used car for my boy. Also would add another problem we had. We purchased another new car for the wife (a strattus) and after a few months we were having problems with it, I called the service dept. and ask to talk to a service agent or repairman about the problem with the car and was told I could not speak to anyone about it and that I would have to bring it in. I explain that I work alot of hours and I live about 50 miles away to no avail. I also ask to speak to the management to get around the snotty guy on the phone to get help to no avail also. I finally told them fine, after buying more than 7 new cars from them I can take my loyalty elsewhere and I did. I also called metrochrysler accross the river in Columbia and they not only talked to me for quite a while but diagnosed the problem. Needless to say I shop there now. jeff

It was not mike walls decision, not to take a bank draft. That IS THE DEALERSHIPS OWNERSHIP POSISTION the dealership takes no bank drafts ie: (ussa, road loan, first cap, state farm ins.etc.) if that is the type of loan you have, ie:( internet ) dont waste your time! go to a different dealer!!!

I want to say I am a Real Estate Broker not in the car business. To your point about the truck. you said yourself that the KBB value was $34,000 and they were asking $26,903 thats $7,000.00 off true market value. WTF??? you must be a moran, Think about it If I had a $100.00 bill and I was asking $80.00 for it. would still offer a lower price? what an idiot. you would not know what a good deal was if it bit you in the nuts! I understand what the dealership did they jerked you around and caused you to lose out on that $7,000.00 savings, Good for them. you see most dealership owners are worth between 40-80 Million dollars. The public will never hurt a dealer, See the public thinks that a dealership only makes their money on the car. eg.. they buy a car for x and sell it for y . this is just not true. the car sale is the last place a dealer makes their money. Do you know that a dealership makes approx 1 million per month out of the finance office, and another 750,000.00 from service see the car is a facade but the public is to stupid to see that. It happens with real estate too, a seller will be asking $249,900.00 for a home and a buyer would offer $220,000.00 or so on their first offer, they have no bearing on their offer it just sounds good to the buyer. well what if I told you that the house that was listed for 250k was only worth 185k would you still make the offer of 220k ? no you wouldnt. Now what if i told you that the house that was listed for 250k was worth 10 million? what would you offer then? 1,2,3 maybe as high as 7 million and you still got a great deal. Dont pay attn to what a seller is asking if you do then you are letting them set the price. you should make your offer based on facts and not somthing you pulled out of your ass.
